Even planets can have happy faces!

“Kids, look at this!
There is a giant happy face on Mars — really!
It’s a huge crater that is 219 kilometers wide (that’s bigger than many cities!).

It looks like a smiley face because:
👀 Two small craters make the eyes
😊 A curved mountain makes the smile

Scientists call it Galle Crater, and they first saw it in pictures taken by the Viking 1 spacecraft in the 1970s.

Sometimes, frost and dust on Mars make the face look even clearer —
like Mars is smiling at us from far away!
